The Epic Part Two   NEW!

We will survey six modes of epic in modern times (1800 to the present): (1) epics of deep civility; (2) amoral aspirations--beyond good and evil; (3) humanist revolt and devastating warfare; (4) social-psychological dislocation; (5) meaningful interplay of cultures; (6) visionary epic. The challenge of this ambitious study is in determining -- as a group -- whether epic is possible in the modern era, and which writers have achieved such a standard.
