'A Rich Spot of Earth'; Thomas Jefferson's Revolutionary Garden at Monticello  

Class 1: "Thomas Jefferson, Gardener." We will discuss the themes that defined Jefferson's interest in horticulture, landscape design, and botany. We will also briefly review the history of Monticello after Jefferson's death, and look at the restoration of the flower gardens and Grove. Class 2: "Thomas Jefferson's Revolutionary Garden." We will explore Jefferson's most ambitious horticultural effort: the 1,000-foot-long terraced vegetable garden." Class 3: "The Fruit and Fruit Trees of Monticello" will deal with Jefferson's (and his contemporaries) adventures in fruit growing and the dawn of American horticulture, and, if time is available, discuss Jefferson's favorite trees.
