Broken Idols: Othello, Belief, and Post-Modernism

Shakespeare's Othello has come in recent years to be appreciated for a greater level of complexity than almost any other of the tragedies (save only Lear). This class will view Othello as a surprisingly contemporary look at the quest for meaning and belief in a postmodern "self-valued" society - how we invent idols for ourselves. We will use a video production of the play to focus our discussion.
