The History of Kenya and Ngugi wa Thiong'o    NEW!

The course will explore Kenya's history from the late nineteenth century to today through the novels and memoirs of Ngugi wa Thiong'o, Kenya's leading novelist. We will also watch a documentary film. We will examine pre-colonial societies, the colonial conquest, the impact of the First and Second World Wars, and the 1930s depression on Kenyan societies, before focusing on the Mau Mau rebellion of the 1950s. We will scrutinize the careers of Jomo Kenyatta, both as nationalist leader and as president, and the 24 year-rule of Daniel Moi, and his successors, Presidents Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta
