John Trumbull's iconic painting, The Declaration of Independence, July 4th 1776 was a long time in the making. The final version that hangs in the rotunda of the US Capitol today signifies an interesting collaboration between the artist and his contemporary, Thomas Jefferson. This course will focus on this painting supported by examples of other pertinent works from Trumbull's studio. The art is discussed within the context of the political events of the time and offers a different approach to understanding the ambitions for the new Republic along with the personal aspirations of both Trumbull and Jefferson.
