Beginning with classical Greece, we will take a whirlwind tour of the theatre’s development over the centuries. We will make stops in Athens, Rome, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and then take a deep dive into modern and contemporary theatrical forms. Finally, we will touch on non-Western theatrical traditions. Along the way, we will see how the theatre has always reflected the beliefs, values, politics, and social mores of the culture it inhabits. The presentation will be predominantly visual – drawings, photographs, videos. No reading will be required, but an annotated bibliography will guide those who wish to delve further into the subject.
