Information: David J. Hirschman operates Hirschman Water & Environment, a small business in Charlottesville focused on environmental protection. He has spent four decades working to bring understanding to the issues of water pollution and ecosystem protection. Dave has also collaborated extensively with colleagues, endeavoring to restore the Chesapeake Bay watershed and its local waterways. He recently published his first work of fiction, The Tenacious Bloom. In the book, Agent Aliyah Aurea, with the FBI Division of Environmental Crimes, tackles four environmental cases utilizing the science and arts of geology, botany, and hydrology to solve the cases. She must also navigate awkward alliances with a cast of characters, including a geologist rabbi, an imposing small town public works director, and a disgruntled botanist with a vendetta. While this environmental mystery is full of clues, there are also enticing ecological messages embedded in the plot.

Description:
Reflections from a retired Financial Advisor who used an educational approach with her clients. Join us for a light hearted discussion about becoming more confident with your money and investments, explore your money story which often colors your relationship with money and your finances, learn about topics that mystify you in a safe space, with the goal of leaving the group feeling a bit more empowered about your financial decision making.
Graduating with an Ed.S. in Psychology, Margie worked as a School Psychologist before starting her own Financial practice in the Midwest. She moved to Charlottesville in 1987, driving cross country during the crash of ‘87 and slowly built up a clientele of teachers, nurses and every day individuals who wanted to be involved in the process of growing their hard earned assets. Margie, who retired in 2023, learned early on that her background in psychology was valuable with steering clients into becoming more confident financial decision makers.

The program will touch upon the following elements crucial to an understanding of the Middle East and Israel’s place in it: issues of water, natural resources, religion, outside influences, regional alliances as well as survey the timeline of Israel’s military conflicts. Given the current wars with Iranian proxies: Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and Shiite militias in both Syria and western Iraq, Israel finds itself struggling to free itself from the noose Iran has attempted to place around its neck. Strategically, Israel has had to change focus from deterrence to survival. One entire session will be devoted to the War in Gaza: Operation Iron Swords. Finally, we will then examine Israel’s relations with its neighbors, along with threats to, and opportunities for, peaceful coexistence.

JJ Towler has attended many OLLI classes and occasionally serves as class moderator. She has enjoyed classes on art, history, health, science and more. OLLI seemed a pleasant pastime and a chance to meet other people who shared similar interests. But there were two classes that were truly life-changing experiences for her. One was a class taught by three master gardeners on “Growing a Greener Garden” and another class taught by Ruth Walkup, “Sub-Saharan Africa: Facts, Fictions, and the Way I Figure It.” These classes inspired JJ to turn her front yard into a native plant garden and opened the door to discovering the beauty, adventure, and fascinating people of a small African country, Botswana. Come see what JJ learned and join in a discussion of the these topics.
