Course Description: Justene Hill Edwards, Associate Professor, Corcoran Department of History, College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences We are pleased to welcome Professor Hill Edwards back to OLLI to discuss her new book. Justene Hill Edwards’ research explores the intersection of African American history, American economic history, and the history of American slavery. Specifically, she examines slavery’s influence on the evolution of African American economic life. Her new book, Savings and Trust: The Rise and Betrayal of the Freedman’s Bank, chronicles the rise and fall of the Freedman’s Savings and Trust Company. Savings and Trust emphasizes the importance of the Freedman’s Bank and its collapse by connecting its failure to modern issues such as the racial wealth gap. Hill Edwards is also working on A Short History of Inequality, which will interrogate the ways in which inequality has pervaded and structured American life. Her book was recently featured on NPR’s Fresh Air.

- This schedule has been update.
Description: The program will touch upon the following elements crucial to an understanding of the Middle East and Israel’s place in it: issues of water, natural resources, religion, outside influences, regional alliances as well as survey the timeline of Israel’s military conflicts. Given the current wars with Iranian proxies: Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and Shiite militias in both Syria and western Iraq, Israel finds itself struggling to free itself from the noose Iran has attempted to place around its neck. Strategically, Israel has had to change focus from deterrence to survival. One entire session will be devoted to the War in Gaza: Operation Iron Swords. Finally, we will then examine Israel’s relations with its neighbors, along with threats to, and opportunities for, peaceful coexistence.
