  • Spring 1781: Threatened by the British, the Virginia legislature and Gov. Thomas Jefferson fled to Charlottesville. Expecting to bag the lot of them, British Lieut. Col. Banastre Tarleton raced westward with 250 cavalrymen. What he hadn’t expected, however, was the intervention of one brave Virginian—Jack Jouett Jr.
