Course Description:
This course presents an in-depth study of Abraham Lincoln from 1854 to 1865 with an emphasis on Lincoln's essential characteristics and his evolving views on slavery, racial equality, and civil rights. Was Lincoln a radical Republican with abolitionist beliefs or a reluctant emancipator and a biased liberator? The course will examine Lincoln's moral certainty and his political sagacity to abolish slavery in the United States. What is the "Lincoln Factor" that transcends history? The course will focus on how Lincoln confronted slavery and its expansion as an Illinois politician, his unexpected rise to become President, and Lincoln's masterful presidential leadership to preserve the Union and abolish slavery.

Course Description:
When women were allowed to enlist in the US military in 1917, the decision was universally lauded. Such an undertaking would have met a very different response in 1870. Women were felt to be unsuited for that most sacrosanct of male endeavors, war. Somehow, in the intervening years, public attitudes shifted. The story of how America came to view women’s military capabilities differently is the subject of the course Athena Militant: The Untold Stories of Womens' Military Organizations 1870 - 1900. Long forgotten by history, these informal military organizations were critical to overcoming the last barrier to universal suffrage.

Course Description:
Louis Wain was a famous artist in England 120 years ago but is largely unknown in the USA—despite a 2021 Amazon movie about his life. In the early 20th century, most English homes had books, magazines, or calendars with Wain’s cat illustrations. H. G. Wells said Wain “…invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world.” This one-session course will focus on Wain’s cat art while describing his tragic but influential life. Cat lovers—even those who’ve seen the Amazon movie—will enjoy his images and learn more about this forgotten artist.

Born into a wealthy family, Katharine Hepburn shot to early fame, winning the first of her four Oscars (a record) when only 26, though she soon was labelled “box office poison.” She quickly brought about her own comeback with The Philadelphia Story and became an icon of screen in both dramatic and comedic roles. This course will include many performance excerpts (including her single stage musical!) and discuss her screen persona as an independent woman, her legacy, and life, including her relationship with Spencer Tracy.

Course Description:
The JFK Assassination is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. Our prior class provided a survey of the chronology of the tragedy in Dallas and the publishing of the findings in the Warren Commission Report. The Report made the best possible case that Lee Harvey Oswald (LHO) acted alone and killed the President. The inconsistencies and use of highly selective supporting evidence have spawned a generation of endless speculation, conspiracy theories and over 2,000 books and documentaries. Based on feedback, we will examine selected areas in further detail. Although helpful, participation in the prior class is not a requirement. Required material: Open mind and growth mindset.
Suggested Reading: Over time, start reading: Warren Commission Report: Table of Contents | National Archives: Foreword, Chapter 1: Summary and Conclusions; The Kennedy Half Century (Larry Sabato) or via online The Kennedy Half Century | Coursera| Supplemental books with different perspectives e.g., Rush to Judgement, Case Closed, The Unspeakable, Crossfire, 22 November 1963: A Brief Guide to the JFK Assassination

Course Description:
This course updates the previously taught course. Everyone talks about the rule of law, but few people seem to know what it is. It is neither a rule nor a law, but it may be the most important feature of American law. We’ll look at its history and meaning, and its importance here and elsewhere in the modern world. Russia’s assault on Ukraine and China’s assault on Hong King’s legal system will be considered as case studies. We’ll also look at efforts of the World Justice Project and others to assess the state of the rule of law around the world today.” Suggested Reading: Reading material will be provided as new materials become available, especially as to developments in Ukraine, Russia, Hong Kong, the EU and the US.

- This course has not been scheduled. Once we have scheduled this course it will be announced to the Fall 2022 members in the members-only Insider.
Course Description: The mountains and valleys of Virginia have driven fascinating stories of human culture and animal ecology. Museum scientists will discuss why these regions are so biodiverse, and how Virginia’s first human cultures gathered resources and thrived. Beginning with invertebrate and amphibian diversity and evolution, the course will explore how a complex landscape has led to unique assemblages of these creatures. The fossil record shows a similar pattern, but over time on a changing planet. The series will conclude with a look at resources use by the first Virginians prior to European contact.
Note: Suggested Reading: http://www.virginiaplaces.org/regions/physio.html
Note there are 5 physiographic regions of Virginia (Coastal Plain, Piedmont, Blue Ridge, Ridge and Valley, and Appalachian Plateau). Each supports distinctive geology and climate, thus affecting the distribution of species in the Commonwealth.
