Motorcycle Safety

Feel more comfortable on your bike! This refresher course designed for riders who already have basic skills includes a five-hour, online e-course that must be completed prior to the start of the course, classroom discussion addressing advanced safety and handling emergency situations and hands-on riding practice in a controlled, off-street environment. This course is not designed for beginners.

Participants who satisfactorily complete a motorcycle safety course will be issued a Motorcycle Safety Foundation® completion card, which can help reduce insurance costs. License waiver courses may exempt participants from the state’s required written and riding test when applying for a motorcycle license.

• Motorcycles are not provided for this course.
You will need to provide an appropriate street-legal motorcycle. If you are borrowing a motorcycle, you must have written permission from the owner. Participants using personal motorcycles must have proof of insurance and the motorcycle must pass a safety inspection at the beginning of the class. A limited number of motorcycles are available to rent for an additional fee.

The course is held at the Pellissippi State Hardin Valley Campus. The outdoor riding portion of the courses will be conducted, rain or shine.

Attire & Safety Equipment:
You will need to provide and wear all required attire and safety equipment:

• A TDOT-approved motorcycle helmet. Helmets without a face shield will require you to also provide eye protection.
• Full gloves (must completely cover the fingers and palms)
• Long sleeved shirt or jacket
• Long pants (jeans, leather or other heavy material)
• Over the ankle leather footwear (with low heels and no thick toes)
• Rain gear (if needed)

Failure to meet appropriate safety equipment requirements for the class may result in forfeiture of registration and incur a rescheduling fee.

Online E-Course
All participants must complete an online e-course prior to the start of the in-person class. The e-course takes approximately five hours to complete. Successful completion of both the e-course and classroom training is required to receive a passing grade from the class. You will receive an email with the link to begin the e-course one week prior to the start of your class. If you do not have access to a computer or internet to complete the e-course prior to the class, please let the Workforce & Community Development office know at 865-539-7167 or wcd@pstcc.edu at least two days in advance.

Cancellations & Rescheduling
Cancellations or rescheduling for motorcycle safety courses must be made seven days prior to the start of the course. Cancellations and reschedule requests less than seven days before the start of the class will forfeit the full course registration fee of the class. Rescheduling requests less than seven days before the start of the class will also incur an additional $150 rescheduling fee. Please be aware that if you cancel or reschedule before the seven-day deadline, but after you begin the e-course, you will forfeit the $39.99 portion of your registration fee for the e-course. If the instructor feels a student is not progressing or is being dangerous to themselves or others, the instructor may ask the student to leave at any time during the class. A student who does not complete the class satisfactorily should not expect a refund.

Waitlists
Registration for classes often fills several weeks in advance. If you join a waitlist, we encourage you to also register for the next available class with open seats. Being on the waitlist does not guarantee you a spot in the class. We will only contact those on the waitlist if a cancelation occurs.
