The ability to draw in any medium trains you to observe and become more familiar with the world around you. In this two-day intensive workshop for beginners, local artist Diann Bishop will teach you the basics of visual composition to create a landscape and still life. You’ll practice using a simple grid and ships to understand proportions and placement and create dimensions using gradation with various types of drawing dimensions using gradation with various types of drawing pencils. You will need to bring your own paper and pencils.

• One 9”x12” smooth sketching pad
• Ruler
• Magic rub eraser
• Kneaded eraser
• 12-piece drawing pencil set (including an HB and 4H grade pencil)
• Tissues or paper towels

This workshop will discover the world of illustration with botanical renderings done with watercolors. Watercolor is an expressive paint medium with several unique qualities. We will discuss the method of Illustration and color palette we will use. This course will include exploration of the following botanicals: Parrot Tulip, New England Aster, Amaryllis, and Artichoke.

This popular class teaches you to truly observe your subject by learning two essential skills: finding the contour (outer shape) and mapping (the darks, mid-tones, and lights inside that create depth). We'll start with simple still life objects like pears and apples, then progress to more complex compositions. By the end, you'll draw what your eyes actually see, not what your brain assumes.

Create a festive design worthy of the front of your holiday cards in this relaxing Zentangle® class. Inspired by poinsettias, snowflakes, and ornaments, students will learn new patterns, tangle enhancers, and techniques for adding color to their composition. Students will leave with a completed piece of art ready for cards, framing, or gifting. Some Zentangle experience is helpful.

Discover a dramatic twist on the traditional Zentangle® method by creating beautiful designs on black paper tiles. Using white pens and pencils, you’ll be guided step by step to build striking patterns while learning how highlights replace shading on dark surfaces. Practice techniques for smooth ink flow and controlling pressure to create both bold and delicate lines. By the end of class, you’ll have a finished piece that glows with contrast and depth.

Students should have experience with the zentangle method before taking this class where we will dive into the magic and mystery of drawing Celtic Knots.

Step into a whimsical fairy garden where mushrooms become the canvas for beautiful Zentangle® patterns. In this guided class, you’ll create imaginative tangled mushrooms while learning how to build patterns that enhance their natural shapes. Along the way, you’ll tuck in a few magical Zentangle creatures for extra charm and personality. Leave with a playful finished piece and new tangling ideas to explore.

Watercolor is an expressive paint medium with several unique properties. In this six-week beginner class with Diann Bishop, discover what brushes and paints you’ll need to get started, how to work with watercolor paper, mixing colors and making flat, gradated and variegated washes. The subject matter for this class changes each term. You will need to bring your own paper, paint and brushes. Visit our website for a full list of supplies needed. 

For supplies, you will need to provide:

• A watercolor brush set that includes a size 8 round brush and size 4 round brush (bristle brushes are not recommended for watercolor painting)
• A watercolor paint tube set with a minimum of 10 colors. If you’d prefer to purchase individual tubes of paint instead of a set, some suggested colors include burnt umber, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, yellow ochre, raw sienna, purple, alizarin crimson, cad yellow, bright red and sap green.
• Six sheets of 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper, 9"x12" or larger
• One pad of palette paper (any size) or you can use wax paper as a palette
• One small sketch pad with a pencil and eraser (or printer paper)
• A ruler
• A small cup or container to hold water
• A roll of paper towels or tissues
• Photos of your preferred painting subjects
• A blow dryer (optional - may be used later in the class)
