Science & Spirit: A Personal Cosmology Project

Science and religion continue to be antagonists. This class will explore spirituality through modern scientific understanding of cosmology, evolutionary quantum biology, consciousness, and a new discipline of quantum cognition. We will read excerpts from several authors, watch videos, discuss issues, and optionally, write our own personal cosmology story. Sources will include: • Spiritual and philosophical perspectives from Alfred North Whitehead, Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung as described in Adam Frank’s book The Constant Fire; • The (orthodox) Core Theory--a scientific cosmology dominated by Dark Energy, Dark Matter and Quantum Field Theory (from selected videos including the Terry Lectures of 2009 and the Gifford Lectures of 2016); • Some of the non-orthodox theories from Eric Verilinde, Lee Smolin, Fay Dowker • The nature of life through the science of Quantum Biology (MIT professor Seth Lloyd, and Professors McFadden and Al-Khalili from University of Surrey); • Finally, we will explore consciousness from the bold scientific theories of Conscious Realism (by cognitive science professor Donald Hoffman of UC-Irvine), Integrated Information Theory (from Christof Koch and Guilio Tonini,) as well as A Framework for the Union of Science and Spirituality by Federico Faggin.
