Prescott Valley is growing at a phenomenal pace and is made up of transplants from across the U.S. There's a surprising amount to know about the area: its history, geography, government and recreation. There's a lot that sets it apart from, and ties to, the neighbor up the highway. We'll have a guest speaker from the Town government (yes; it's a town, not a city, and we'll go over what that means), an overview from a local history expert and lots of good-to-know practicalities.

This class will look at a variety of interesting things about countries of the World, such as the fact that the smallest 145 countries by area could all fit into Russia with room to spare, or that the US, China and India could all fit intact into Africa, or that the population of the island of Java is greater than the population of the entire nation of Russia.

The focus of this course will be on the deep culture of Persia, its history, culture, conversion to Islam and rise of the Shia state. We will also cover the Shah and clergy, the Pahlavis, Anglo-Iranian Oil Company and Mossadegh. CIA’s Operation Ajax, Cold War alignments, Iran’s Revolution, rule of the Ayatollahs, war with Iraq, Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps and the current conflict. For John Kennedy, peace was a lifelong quest -- starting with the failure of appeasement in the 1930s and his military service in the 1940s and ending with his audacious attempt to end the cold war and align the US with the anti-colonial world at the time of his murder in 1963. We will examine his family history, education, travel and listen carefully to his major speeches. At various junctures, we'll consider his relevance for today's conflicted world.
