The Literacy micro-credential series helps elementary educators strengthen their understanding of effective, research-based literacy instruction for all learners. Participants will explore foundational literacy research, develop a personal philosophy of literacy instruction, and learn practical strategies for supporting students who struggle with reading.

Designed for elementary general education and special education teachers, the series includes two 10-hour professional development micro-credentials focused on literacy foundations and strategies for struggling readers. Each micro-credential may be completed individually and is grounded in research from the What Works Clearinghouse, the Report of the National Reading Panel, and the International Literacy Association.

  • Elementary Literacy: Overview of Literacy

    This micro-credential provides you with resources and information from the last two decades of research on effective literacy instruction for all learners. You will review the research and then create your personal philosophy of literacy instruction to use in your own classroom. The intended audience for this micro-credential is all Elementary General Education and Special Education Teachers and the difficulty is low. This micro-credential is grounded in research from the following sources: What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) Practice Guides: Foundational Skills to Support Reading for Understanding in Kindergarten Through 3rd Grade; and the Report of the National Reading Panel: Teaching Children to Read; and the International Literacy Association.


 

  • Elementary Literacy: Strategies for Struggling Readers

    In this micro-credential, you will learn about the key skills that all students must master to become proficient readers. You will be provided with research-based enhancements that make reading instruction more inclusive, and you will learn real world examples of how to make the instruction more systematic and explicit. The intended audience for this micro-credential is all Elementary General Education and Special Education Teachers and the difficulty is medium. This micro-credential is grounded in research from the following sources: What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) Practice Guides: Foundational Skills to Support Reading for Understanding in Kindergarten Through 3rd Grade; and the Report of the National Reading Panel: Teaching Children to Read; and the International Literacy Association.
