Basic Carpentry and Woodworking   

Class Overview

Are you interested in building, or repairing, things from wood? Get started learning basic carpentry and woodworking skills in this rewarding hands-on class.

Gain confidence using common, affordable handheld power tools in safe and versatile ways to accomplish what typically requires a shop full of large and expensive equipment.
 
Students will use hand and power tools to plan, measure, cut, and assemble a basic wooden toolbox, learning useful tips and tricks along the way. Skills and techniques presented will help students feel more prepared to tackle basic carpentry and woodworking projects at home.

Supply List

Please bring the following supplies and safety equipment to class. Items can be purchased from hardware stores and some pharmacies.

  • 1-2 sharp pencils
  • Eye protection (safety glasses)
  • Hearing protection (earmuffs or earplugs)
  • Dust mask (KN95 or N95 work well)
  • Hair tie if relevant
  • Tape measure if you choose (optional)
  • Clothing: You will be most comfortable and safe in work-type clothes: short- or snug-sleeved tops, durable pants, and closed-toed shoes. Please avoid wearing loose clothing or items with ties or strings that could get in the way and jewelry that could be damaged or make it difficult to work.

  • Become familiar with materials, methods, and preventing or troubleshooting issues that may come up when doing carpentry projects
  • Gain skills and confidence to tackle basic carpentry projects on your own
