Class Overview
Do you want to learn Chinese but have no time to commute to a school? This class is designed for anyone who wishes to learn practical Mandarin Chinese (Simplified) from their home or office. In this online class, students will meet and interact with the instructor and other like-minded classmates. Students will learn basic Chinese characters, vocabulary and expressions in everyday life. Interpreting is a fast growing industry in the United States, and in no area is there more need for interpreters than in health and human services. In this class, you will learn how to work as a professional interpreter in the rewarding field of health and human services.
Currently, the country is experiencing a shortage of professional interpreters in almost all language groups, both for in-person services and for remote interpreting. If you are bilingual, your skills are valuable and in demand.
This class is designed for interpreting students who have already had some general introductory training and who wish to specialize in the healthcare field. In particular, this class will address:
- The purpose and roles of an interpreter in health and human service settings.
- Interpreter ethics applied to healthcare settings.
- Introduction to the U.S. healthcare system (settings, providers, organization)
- Basic medical terminology.
- Accuracy in consecutive interpreting.
- Practice of consecutive interpreting with basic healthcare dialogues.
- Opportunities for additional education as a professional interpreter.
Led by nationally-recognized interpreter trainer Cindy Roat, this class will be taught principally in English but will also include bilingual practice sessions.

This advanced class will give you the opportunity to learn new vocabulary, as well as native-like phrases, practical expressions, and idioms. Gain an introduction to the basic technology tools used in translation and interpretation and learn how to work with them.
In this class, you will be able to use one of the most common computer assisted translation (CAT) tools, and experience how to process translation professionally and efficiently. You will also have the opportunity to explore technology tools used for interpreting services.
Discover the effects and impacts that technologies like machine-translation software (not to be confused with computer-aided translation tools) have on translators and interpreters in the today’s industry. By familiarizing yourself with translation and interpretation specific technologies, you will be prepared for futher studies in translation and interpretation, as well as future work.

Class Overview
Build upon your Spanish language skills and experience! Continue to develop your Spanish listening, speaking, and reading skills. We will focus on speaking in a practical and culturally relevant context.
Build vocabulary that you can use in conversations that reflects a wide variety of situations such as vacation travel, running errands, shopping for groceries, and daily routines. Improve your ability to speak and write sentences using reflexive constructions in present tense, and the preterit past tense.

Class Overview
Kum arayn (come in) -- join the Yiddish revival! We will begin by learning the alef-beys together, then go on to learn basic conversation, reading, and grammar through interactive games, songs, and dialogues. Gain confidence and vocabulary to carry on a conversation beyond just knowing the odd Yiddish word or phrase. Learn vocabulary for greetings, family members, health, the weather, and so on, through a communicative approach. Gain practice speaking and listening with the instructor and classmates. Enjoy a fun and interactive environment. By the end of the course, you will be able to read, speak, and translate simple Yiddish. All are welcome -- no prior Yiddish knowledge necessary. Class Overview
Enhance your knowledge of Yiddish and celebrate the Eastern European Jewish culture that gave rise to it. In this fun, interactive intermediate class, learn to read, write, and speak Yiddish by singing, counting, creating, recording, copying, and conversing in large and small groups.
Begin to learn cursive Yiddish (finally, you can read the back of those old photos!) and improve your fluency with the Yiddish/Hebrew alphabet. Build Yiddish communication skills for inclusion in American life through conversations and dialogues.
In this class you will also become more familiar with Eastern European Jewish life and the sources of Yiddish, as well as how those sources used by Yiddish artists, writers, musicians and everyday folks. Explore a plethora of publications for modern Yiddish learners and gain new vocabulary by reading Yiddish primers and workbooks.
Increase your skills in writing, decoding, understanding recordings and spoken Yiddish. Continue to enjoy songs, stories and poems from past to present. Delve into the ideas, values and cultural experience embedded in Yiddish language.

Build more advanced Yiddish vocabulary and expressions in this interactive class! Develop advanced conversational skills while continuing to explore Yiddish-speaking culture.
In class, gain experience reading longer Yiddish texts and translating them together with classmates. Continue to develop practical listening, speaking and reading skills. Learn idiomatic expressions and phrases for everyday life to help you have more advanced and natural conversations.
We will also continue to explore Yiddish culture to gain more understanding and appreciation of the history and traditions.
