Class Overview
Would you like to better understand your boat's engine? Learn about marine diesel engines in this six-session class designed for recreational boaters.
Investigate the fundamentals of operation, maintenance and troubleshooting for small diesel propulsion generator engines. Gain the knowledge and confidence needed to do basic maintenance and keep your engine in good working condition.
In addition to the information outlined below, you'll also receive a list of recommended books and reference materials to continue your learning outside of class. Enjoy gaining knowledge from a professional in the boating industry and asking any questions you have.

Class Overview
Whether captain or crew, there are essential knots and line-handling skills that every boater should know that you will learn in this class. Line-handling skills are important to docking, transiting the locks, or even “Mediterranean mooring” on your next bareboat charter. Becoming good at these skills will make you a more competent boater.
In this class, you can learn how to handle dock lines safely, even under load. Discover the best way to store lines so they are always neat and immediately ready to use and which knots are appropriate to use in various situations, and learn how to tie the most essential boating knots. You will have a chance to practice these skills.
We will also discuss how to communicate effectively between the person at the helm and the person handling lines, which is a key to success for safe boating.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this class, you will be able to:

- throw a line effectively

Class Overview
A bit anxious about your boat's electrical systems? Want to be more confident diving into them? This three-session class will cover both the basic theory and the beginner hands-on practical skills that you'll need to start working on your boat's electrical systems.
The majority of the class time will be spent using tools or equipment, and you'll have plenty of time to ask questions of the instructor (no homework!). This will be project-based learning, and by the end of the class each student will have individually installed and tested AC and DC electrical systems on their own training board.
Learning Objectives
- Discover the differences between AC and DC power
- Learn to use common marine electrical tools and safety equipment
- Practice using a digital multimeter on AC and DC electrical systems
- Properly select wiring and over-current protection for AC and DC electrical loads
- Properly strip, crimp, and heat-shirink wire connections of carious types
- Secure wiring in engine room and non-engine room spaces using carious methods

Class Overview
A Very High Frequency (VHF) marine radio is an essential piece of equipment for every boater for safety and navigation. Knowing how to use it correctly can be confusing, but it won't be after taking this class! In this course, you will learn how to operate your VHF radio with confidence.
Even in the cell phone era, your VHF radio should be your go-to device in an emergency for monitoring your surroundings and for communicating with other boats. We will cover all the basics so you will be ale to use your radio knowledgeably and effectively. Learn which channels to use in various situations. Explore how to make and receive routine and emergency radio calls, following proper radio protocol and etiquette.
Gain the knowledge you need to use your VHF radio in any situation and with confidence.

Class Description
This class builds on the skills taught in our Outboard Motor Maintenance Basics class. Gain hands-on experience performing the most useful maintenance tasks. These practices will prolong the life of your outboard motor while saving you money!
Plan on getting a little dirty. Personal protective equipment is provided. This class will focus on four-stroke gasoline engines 20 hp and less. Each student will have their own outboard motor to work on.
Learning Objectives
In this class you will learn how to:
- Remove, inspect, and re-install a propeller
- Remove, inspect, and re-install anodes ("zincs")
- Remove, inspect, and re-install a lower unit and water pump
- Start a manual choke outboard engine and clear flooding
- Disassemble, inspect, and re-assemble a marine outboard motor carburetor
- Troubleshoot common outboard motor issues

The dramatic landscape of the Salish Sea makes for beautiful scenery, but it also creates some especially challenging sea conditions. Learn how to predict the tides and currents and how to read current charts and tide tables. We will also discuss how weather affects tides and currents.

Knowing the water conditions is critical to safe boating. Since weather conditions on the water can differ greatly from those on land, it's important to listen to the marine forecast before heading out. Learn about the science behind weather systems and the basics of global weather patterns.
Get an introduction to interpreting atmostpheric pressure, fronts, and other weather data. Become familiar with the specifics of the Salish Sea weather patterns and hone your observational skills. Gain tools and resources that will be most valuable for you to obtain marine weather information.
This class will help you feel more knowledgeable about weather conditions on the water and how to prepare for your next trip.
