Course Description: Class Overview
Practice American Sign Language (ASL) and continue to improve your skills in this engaging intermediate class. Expand your sign language vocabulary and cultural understanding in order to communicate more effectively.
Continue building your ASL skills learned in our Level 3 class, or comparable experience. Improve your understanding of narrative structure in ASL, and movement agreement. Explore and implement more classifiers in themes of action and incidents. Take a deep dive into a few grammar structures such as rhetorical questions and conjunctions.
Enjoy being part of a community of learners while improving your ASL communications skills!

Course Description: Class Overview
Is fingerspelling usually too fast to read and hard to spell out? Develop strong skills in American Sign Language (ASL) fingerspelling and numbering, and improve your overall fluency.
In this class, you can gain more confidence in ASL by spending a few weeks focused specifically on fingerspelling. Build robust receptive and expressive skill, while improving word and sentence recognition and comprehension in a conversational context. Advance your speed, clarity and fluency in ASL.
This class is taught entirely in ASL and designed for ASL students who have taken at least 2 quarters (40 hours) of Continuing Education ASL or the equivalent. No textbook is required.

Class Overview
Would you like to be able to make a variety of beautiful and delicious baked treats with confidence? Gain fundamental skills and knowledge for baking in this rewarding hands-on class.
Learn about techniques, ingredients, interactions, and simple practices to ensure success in baking. This quarter we will focus on yeasted breads, quick breads, pies, and laminated pastries such as croissants and pain au chocolate.
Enjoy working in small groups to make delectable baked goods, both sweet and savory. We will also discuss alternative ingredients for people with restricted diets, food sensitivities, and food allergies.
Take advantage of the well-equipped student kitchen at Seattle Culinary Academy. Learn baking fundamentals as well as useful tips from an experienced Certified Executive Pastry Chef, and develop practices for working in a clean, safe, and efficient way.
An additional materials fee of $50 will be due to the instructor.

Class Overview
Are you interested in building, or repairing, things from wood? Get started learning basic carpentry and woodworking skills in this rewarding hands-on class.
Learn how to use power tools safely and confidently, understanding which tool to use for various jobs. Explore materials and how to select the right materials for the job you want to work on. Discover the basics of joinery, jigs, carpentry, woodworking methods, and project design, in a woodshop.
Then apply everything you've learned in a hands-on project. Safely use hand and power tools to construct and assemble a toolbox from start to finish. By the end of class, you'll have created a useful wood box and the skills to continue a new rewarding hobby. You'll be able to use your box for tools, sewing supplies, gardening, etc, and build upon your skills for a lifetime.

Safety equipment can be purchased from hardware stores and some Drug Stores. Purchase what seems comfortable for you to use and wear. Please bring and use your safety equipment to both sessions of this class.

Explore the creative, rewarding, fun art of block printing! This class will teach you how to use linocut to create prints.
Learn the basic skills and techniques of woodblock carving and experience the rewarding feeling you get by peeling off a piece of paper printed with your original art! Make multiple copies for greeting cards, gifts, fabric, and decor. Block printing is an ancient art with roots in many cultures that can provide inspiration. Block prints have a unique and artistic look. If you are not good at designing or drawing? Don’t worry! We have several design options for you.
Use your creativity and curiosity with carving and printing your own one-of-a-kind art! This class is for everybody, from complete beginners to experienced carvers and artists.

Have you ever wanted to make unique and functional cups and bowls from clay? Enjoy an introduction to pottery using a pottery wheel in a local ceramics studio.
Designed for beginners, this class offers hands-on experience in the fundamentals of wheel throwing from start to finish. Enjoy guidance from a local artist in pottery fundamentals including centering, shaping, trimming, and glazing your own pots. The class will cover a variety of vessels including cylinders, bowls, and other functional vessels. Enjoy the thrill of seeing your own pieces after they have been fired and glazed!

Course Description: Class Overview
Chi Kung (also spelled “qigong”) is an ancient health-giving exercise that began in the stone age in China. Combining breathing and movement, it acts like an internal massage for the organs of the body while strengthening the limbs and the spine. "Chi" is translated as breath, and "kung" means exercise.
In this class, learn the 18 movements of Chi Kung and the Swimming Dragon exercise. These are beautiful movements that feel good in the body. This practice can offer many benefits such as focus, balance, relaxation, strengthening, stretching, mindfulness, and overall well-being. The history of Chi Kung includes Chinese medicine, Taoism, martial arts, Confucianism, and Buddhism. All will be discussed to provide a greater understanding and appreciation of this practice.

Drawing is the basis of all visual art, and it can provide a lifetime of enjoyment. In this class for beginners, increase your imagination, creativity, and perception through the practice of drawing!
Learn the fundamentals of drawing: light, shadow, proportions, details, perspective, and three-dimensionality. Practice drawing many subjects including animals, nature, people, and still life.
You’ll be surprised how quickly your skills will improve by observing and drawing along with a step-by-step class presentation! This process will make it easy to understand and put these techniques into practice.
Once you learn these skills, you’ll find them becoming second nature. This practice will greatly increase your ability to represent the world around you with a pencil or pen.

Course Description: Class Overview
Are you an au pair, or recent immigrant, wanting to improve your US English skills? Focus on building your language skills while getting to know other English language learners and building a sense of community in the Seattle region.
This class is taught by a trained English as a second language (ESL) instructor who will help you improve your speaking, listening, vocabulary, and grammar skills. Through group conversations, student-centered grammar practice, informal presentations, field trips, and lots of vocabulary and listening activities, you'll gain more fluency and confidence. Mistakes are encouraged!
Learn American slang and cultural traditions, as well as Seattle customs and lifestyle. Topics include Seattle neighborhoods, American culture, cheap travel, and events around the Seattle area. Enjoy educational, social, and cultural experiences with other au pairs who are living and working in the Seattle area.

Course Description: Class Overview
Whether captain or crew, there are essential knots and line-handling skills that every boater should know that you will learn in this class. Line-handling skills are important to docking, transiting the locks, or even “Mediterranean mooring” on your next bareboat charter. Becoming good at these skills will make you a more competent boater.
In this class, you can learn how to handle dock lines safely, even under load. Discover the best way to store lines so they are always neat and immediately ready to use and which knots are appropriate to use in various situations, and learn how to tie the most essential boating knots. You will have a chance to practice these skills.
We will also discuss how to communicate effectively between the person at the helm and the person handling lines, which is a key to success for safe boating.
Learning Objectives

Course Description: Class Overview
Gain a deeper insight into what’s going on when you cook and bake! Whether you are a home cook or a professional, you can become a better cook with a little knowledge about the science of food and cooking. You'll fall in love with cooking, as well as the beauty of the amazing world we live in.
Many techniques still taught in culinary schools are based on tradition rather than science. In this class, focus on understanding the fascinating field of food science through a combination of fun and fascinating lectures, demos, with some hands-on cooking and baking. Learn to make better choices about cooking methods and techniques, and how to produce better finished products more easily and consistently.
Elevate your knowledge about nutrition, how food works, sustainability issues, and the chemistry of cooking and baking. Develop modern techniques using scientific principles.
Learn many fundamental concepts and apply them to real-world cooking and baking. Below are some of the areas that will be covered in this class. All of these topics will be taught in a way that is accessible to anyone, regardless of their science background.
Topics include:
- food molecules and how they work (water, proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates)
- cooking methods to use and why to use them
- nutrition, nutritional epidemiology (how research is done and what it actually means), and food politics

Project management skills are essential in a wide variety of professional roles, and can even be a wonderful asset in your personal life. Learn how to become a skilled project manager in this class. Discover how to reach the goals of any project successfully, while leading a team to accomplish all aspects of the project.
Gain basic knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques that you can apply to a wide variety of projects, even though each project is unique. Focus on managing a single, stand-alone project as the basis for your learning during this class. In each session, we will work through aspects of the project lifecycle, from planning to executing, to closing, and everything in between. Course Description: Class Overview
Get started learning Italian! Practice simple conversation and learn basic grammar and vocabulary in a low-pressure and supportive atmosphere.
This class is conducted 90% in Italian, but it's geared to students with little background in languages. Time is reserved for questions in English. Learn basic listening and speaking skills in the Italian language. Develop correct pronunciation and begin to build your Italian vocabulary. Learn the basics of Italian grammar and syntax.
Enjoy learning basic phrases in Italian around useful everyday activities, such as telling time, meeting new people, and asking basic personal questions. Learn how to count to 10,000. To get started in Italian, build your foundation by learning the present tense of major verbs, as well as several of the most important irregular verbs.
Italian students usually have the opportunity to attend an Italian opera by Seattle Opera as a class at some point during the year, depending on the Opera's production calendar. Students enjoy discounted tickets with seats near the front, and a lively hosted Seattle Opera "mixer" before the opera begins.

Course Description: Class Overview
A bit anxious about your boat's electrical systems? Want to be more confident diving into them? This three-session class will cover both the basic theory and the beginner hands-on practical skills that you'll need to start working on your boat's electrical systems.
The majority of the class time will be spent using tools or equipment, and you'll have plenty of time to ask questions of the instructor (no homework!). This will be project-based learning, and by the end of the class each student will have individually installed and tested AC and DC electrical systems on their own training board.

Class Overview
When it comes to outboard motors, seasons of neglect will lead to major expenses. Learn the basics that every boater should know about both routine maintenance and annual outboard maintenance.
For about the same cost as an annual dealership service, you'll learn how to take proper care of your outboard motor and keep it in shape so it will start easily. In this class, learn how to perform all of the maintenance items listed below using new parts on running outboard motors. Plan on getting a little dirty in this class! Personal protective equipment is provided.
This class will focus on four-stroke gasoline engines 20 hp and less. Each student will have their own outboard motor to work on.

Would you love to paint but don’t know where to begin? Or have you dabbled in painting and you’d like to get good at it? Gain an introduction to basic painting skills, using both acrylic and/or watercolor paints, in this rewarding class.
In this class, you will learn about paints and materials, and how to use them. Explore the rich topic of color, look at the color wheel, discuss color theory, and experiment with mixing colors to get the results you want. Learn how to use brushes, palette knives, and other tools and supplies.
Explore a wide variety of painting topics, including textures, shadows, light, hue, and value. Learn about perspective and proportions. Explore techniques such as blending, scumbling, alla prima, impasto, chiaroscuro, and sfumato. Learn how to make your own gesso and paints.
Enjoy exercises that will help you build your skills. We will explore subjects such as landscapes (rural and city), still lives, animals, portraits, and styles such as realism, abstraction, pointillism, expressionism, impressionism, and cubism. You will also be able to explore originality in art and paint from photographs, memory, and imagination.

Tai Chi is a health sustaining exercise and a tool for improved body awareness. Practiced by the elderly for balance and circulation and the young for relaxation and martial arts, it is a wonderful holistic activity for all ages.
During this class, you'll learn:
- the Yang Tai Chi short form, which is comprised of 35 individual movements
- Chi Kung, a warm-up exercise and relaxation activity with 18 movements

Expand your creative expression by learning how to paint with watercolors! During this beginning-level hands-on class, you'll tap into your own inherent creativity through lectures and guided exploration, as well as gain inspiration from great works of art.
Learn the basics of traditional watercolor techniques, through lectures, discussion, and experience. You will be guided in developing skills and techniques with the paint and materials. Learn how to carve and create beautiful objects! Gain the basic skills to feel successful and safe carving wood and making your own creations.
During this hands-on class, you will be making two spoons. Get started with the basic skills and safety practices while carving a simple and useful kitchen spoon. Continue to hone your skills as you carve a more decorative "love spoon" -- something often given as a gift. Learn about wood selection, preparing blanks, basic carving techniques, and traditional oil finishing. These skills will help you become prepared for future wood carving projects that you can use in another class or at home.

Class Overview
Learn all about the basics of woodworking in this rewarding hands-on class!
You will learn how to use the main hand tools and power tools in the shop, as well as the important safety rules when using the equipment. Then you will practice on the equipment and make a three-legged stool while being guided at each step of designing, building and finishing your project.
Discover joinery techniques, the importance of sharp tools, when to use different kinds of fasteners and adhesives and basic methods of wood finishing.
The goal of the class is for students to gain confidence on the equipment so that they can work independently in the shop. This class is a prerequisite for Woodworking II. This class requires a minimum age of 18.
In this class, you will learn:
- shop safety, including personal protection in the wood shop
- the properties of wood and how that informs the selection and milling of lumber
- how to properly use hand tools (hand saw, block plane, chisel, and hammer) and power tools (hand drill, router, drill press jointer, planer, and table, miter, and band saws).
- We'll also focus on joinery techniques, the importance of sharp tools when using different kinds of fasteners and adhesives, and basic methods of wood finishing.
Week 1: Please bring a notebook and pencil to the first class.
Weeks 2-10: Students will be required to bring their own Personal Protection Equipment (safety glasses, hearing protection) for all remaining classes.

Continue learning about woodworking and improving your techniques and skills in this hands-on class. Enjoy building a small piece of furniture as you gain confidence using your skills as a woodworker.
Review basic woodworking practices and build upon what you've learned, while practicing woodshop safety. Create a beautiful side table using a variety of tools and techniques. Explore milling and joinery techniques, and learn about power tool maintenance. You will also gain experience using the larger woodworking machines.
Please bring a notebook and pencil to the first class. Students will be required to bring their own Personal Protection Equipment (safety glasses and hearing protection) for all classes.
*** The students must be 18 or older to take this class.
Learning Objectives
- Review woodshop safety practices with an emphasis on the joiner, planer, and table saw
- Learn intermediate milling techniques

Who Might Enjoy This Class?
Preferred experience: successful completion of Woodworking - Level 1 offered by Seattle Central College Continuing Education or equivalent woodworking experience.
