This class explores how sculptors create narrative through form. Over four class meetings we will review diverse statues, reliefs, and public monuments to identify and discuss how elements such as gesture, space, composition, and an artwork's setting create visual narrative in sculpture. Using visual analysis, participants will learn to “read” sculptures as dynamic stories frozen in time. Please note this 4 week class skips June 30 and July 7.

The painting style of impressionism developed in France in the late 19th century. A somewhat similar style was developed in Spain at the hands of the Valencian painter Joaquin Sorolla. Previously little known outside of Spain, Sorolla is becoming a major figure in European art due in part to a series of expositions in 2023 marking the 100th anniversary of his death. We will discuss the life and art of Sorolla, visit the Sorolla museum in Madrid, and attend the 2023 exposition in Madrid which included a spectacular animated virtual reality display of his major works. Please note class will skip July 1 and resume on July 8.
