    What is Time? What is Truth? What is Freedom? We begin with a review of 8 theories of truth, then examine the linguistic philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein, who was intensely interested in the way we speak and think about things in the world. What are words? Where do words come from? How do words relate to things? He argued that our propositions either make sense or nonsense based on 3 crucial tests. "Philosophy is a battle against the bewitchment of our intelligence by means of language."

    During the “Axial Age”, 900 to 300 BC the spiritual foundations of humanity were laid simultaneously and independently in China, India, Persia, Judea, and Greece. We begin in China with Confucius and Lao-Tse, then to India with Jainism, the Upanishads and later Buddha. In Iran Zarathustra taught the struggle between good and evil. Israel had the great Prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah and Micah. And finally to Greece with the great philosophers Parmenides, Heraclitus and Plato.

    In this hands-on course, you will perform stunning experiments and witness fascinating demonstrations that will literally open your eyes to the rich world of color. To discover how the dynamic interaction of light and dark leads to the generation of color, we will use the phenomenological approach to color science. Afterimages, colored shadows, sunset colors, the blue sky, prismatic colors, the rainbow, and the aesthetic experience of color will be explored.

    Lake Baikal in Siberia is the oldest, largest, deepest, and most biologically diverse lake in the world. In this workshop, we will explore the unique geological and biological characteristics of this remarkable water body, including my experiences as co-leader of two scientific expeditions to the lake. We will also discuss the indigenous populations, their traditions of shamanism near the lake, and the critical pollution issues resulting from increased tourism in the area.
