Explore the short story work of six 20th century British and Irish writers who excelled at the form: James Joyce, Katherine Mansfield, V.S. Pritchett, Edna O’Brien, William Trevor, and Penelope Lively. Each week we will focus on the output of a single writer, reading three or four of his/her stories and exploring the sources and particularities of that storyteller’s distinctive narratives style and thematic concerns. Stories will be provided electronically by the instructor and participants should read the assigned stories in advance of each class. There is no prerequisite.
