Chamber Music Weekend Intensive

The Alexander String Quartet This course brings together string, woodwind and piano players to share the joy of playing chamber music. On each of the two days, participants work together on a particular piece of music in chamber ensembles, which range in size from trios through quartets and quintets to larger groups such as nonets. Participants who apply as individuals are given their music assignments; participants who apply as a member of a preformed group select their own music to work on. After practicing and receiving coaching throughout the day, they come together with several other groups in master classes, where each group presents the results of their day’s work to the others. A number of additional social and performance components are included. This course is held in partnership with Chamber Musicians of Northern California (CMNC). The CMNC organizers use their expertise to create compatible chamber groups and to make music assignments from CMNC’s extensive music library. This OLLI registration is only part of the class registration. In order to attend the “Chamber Music Weekend Intensive” a separate application must be done at cmnc.org where more details are available. In addition, participants need to have a sufficient level of experience on piano or a string or woodwind instrument to be able to participate in a chamber ensemble. Registration of this course includes: Session One: 02/16/2019 and/or Session Two: 02/17/2019 The Alexander String Quartet was formed in New York City in 1981 and captured international attention as the first American quartet to win the London International String Quartet Competition in 1985. Its members have serving since 1989 as Ensemble in Residence for San Francisco Performances and Directors of the the Morrison Chamber Music Center in the College of Liberal and Creative Arts at San Francisco State University. Other excellent coaches will join them in teaching at this weekend Intensive.
