|Great Composer & Director Collaborations in Film
This course surveys the modern film score for motion pictures through at least six of the most fruitful director and composer collaborations from the 1950's up through today. Selected examples from each team throughout film history will be demonstrated in class through film clips, interviews with composers and film-makers, and optional selected follow-up readings. Students will also learn the context and importance of the film score and how it functions to support the aesthetic and narrative elements of the story. A background in music history or theory is not required.
We'll discuss functions of film scoring in various historical contexts, Use music and sound terminology as they are applied to film making, describe the ways in which film music relates to narrative storytelling, analyze the elements of a successful collaboration between a film’s director and composer, identify signature styles of notable composers and collaborations, and compare and contrast film music styles in different eras.
Week 1: Overview of 12 main functions of film music, film music production background
Week 2: Bernard Herrmann and Alfred Hitchcock (Vertigo, North by Northwest , Psycho , etc.)
Week 3: Ennio Morricone and Sergio Leone (The Dollars Trilogy, Once Upon a Time In The West)
Week 4: John Williams and Steven Spielberg (Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Indiana Jones, E.T, Schindler’s List, Hook , Catch Me If You Can)
Week 5: Danny Elfman and Tim Burton ( Edward Scissorhands, Batman, Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas ) and Joe Hisaishi and Hayao Miyazaki (My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away)
Week 6: Alan Silvestri and Robert Zemecki (Back To The Future , Forrest Gump, Contact) and overview
David Möschler is an award-winning Bay Area conductor, musical director, and lecturer. He has worked on over 100 different theater productions throughout the country, and served on the faculty of Academy of Art University, San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He frequently guest lectures for many local organizations, specializing in musical theater and film music. In 2013 Möschler founded the Awesöme Orchestra Collective, which he conducts every month.
