Self-Portraits That Anyone Can Do!

Learn the basics of portraiture after being inspired by self-portrait masters of the past, including Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, and Andy Warhol. We will use photographs, pencils, watercolors, and oil pastels to create different ways to see ourselves. We will also learn how to imbue portraits with expression and emotion. No background in art is required and beginners are welcome. Even beginners will be amazed by the results! Students should bring color copies (5x7” or 8x10") of photos of themselves to use in class. Please bring photos that show 3/4 views of your face, rather than frontal face views. The easiest way is to have photos taken of yourself with your cell phone, and then print at home. Try different angles and expressions! All materials are included. $20 material fee. Week One: PowerPoint presentation of the masters of self-portraiture. We will learn the grid/oval method and practice different views. Week Two: Black and white self-portrait using pencils and learning how to apply shading. Week Three: Learning how to use color with oil pastels on black paper Week Four: Color portraits using watercolors. Week Five: Finish works. End of class critique and show.
