West Side Story: Exploring America's Most Beloved Musical

West Side Story was a collaboration with some of America’s most extraordinary music and theater visionaries; Stephen Sondheim, Jerome Robbins, and, of course, Leonard Bernstein. We will examine the careers of Bernstein, Sondheim, and Robbins as we explore the roots and branches of this towering theatrical work. Richard Harrell worked as a singer on several musical theater projects with both Jerome Robbins and Leonard Bernstein. Notably, he sings the role of Bernardo on the 1984 recording of West Side Story conducted by Leonard Bernstein. The session will include video clips from the original Broadway cast, the 1962 Academy Award winning movie, the 1984 recording sessions conducted by Leonard Bernstein, and personal, (and colorful) recollections about working with Bernstein and Robbins.
