Let’s explore artists like Bill Traylor who was born a slave, then worked as a sharecropper, and didn’t start his artistic life until he was in his 80s. He had a major exhibition of his work at the National Art Gallery. Or Njideka Akunyili Crosby who came to the US from Nigeria to study pre-med, only to find that she liked her art courses better. She sold one of her paintings a few years ago for over 3 million dollars. Or how about Jacob Lawrence, who at the age of 23 exploded the art world with his Great Migration series.
