This comprehensive and evidence-based training program developed in partnership with Maine Hire, Maine Bureau of Veterans Services, and Veterans Affairs (VA) Maine Healthcare System.
Ultimate Goal: Creating workplaces where military experience is valued, veterans thrive professionally, and organizations benefit from the unique skills and perspectives veterans bring.
Overview: The primary purpose of this course is for civilian employers to build understanding and cultural awareness when onboarding, training, coaching or developing anyone who has served in the United States Military. What we take for granted or expect as part of civilian society is quite different from the world of the military. Be prepared to have many existing societal myths about service members be challenged, and for your own horizons to be expanded.
Learning Goals:
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of military culture and structure across the six branches of the United States Armed Forces
- Recognize challenges veterans face during civilian transitions, including identity, community, mental health, and financial considerations
- Acquire critical cultural competency skills and practical strategies to create inclusive workplace environments
- Apply best practices for recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and retaining veteran employees
- Build bridges between military and civilian workplace cultures through effective communication strategies
- Understand federal employer incentives and legal obligations related to veteran employment, including the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC), SkillBridge, USERRA, and the HIRE Vets Medallion Award
Micro-Credential: Upon successful completion of this course and scoring 80% or higher on all assessments and quizzes, participants will earn the Military Cultural Employer Workplace Awareness micro-badge, verified by the University of Southern Maine's Military Affiliated Student Hub (USM MASH).
