American History: The Roaring 20's (1920-1929)

In the Election of 1920, Warren G. Harding promised a "return to normalcy" if elected, and he was indeed elected by an American public tired of war, pandemic, arguments over the League of Nations, a bedfast paralyzed president who governed by supposed messages from the First Lady, and the marches of suffragettes - but what was "normal" was another thing altogether in the "Roaring Twenties". The short but terrible Depression of 1920, natural disasters, bootleg liquor, gangland shootouts, and a disturbingly popular Ku Klux Klan nation-wide counterbalanced one of the most prosperous and innovative periods of American History. New appliances, electrified cities, and the purchase of money-making stocks and bonds by everyone (on margin, of course) was the song of America. When President Harding suddenly died of an undiagnosed heart disease, vice-president "Cool Calvin" Coolidge became "Silent Cal" through one and a half Administrations, before well-liked international hero Herbert Hoover's election in 1928. All was speakeasy, flapper and hero-hoodlum fun - that is until Black Monday, October 28, 1929
