Black Death: Pandemic in the Medieval World

Between 1346-1353 the devastating pandemic, later known as The Black Death, ravaged its way across Medieval Europe. No aspect of society remained untouched by the catastrophe. By the time the plague had run its course, one half of the population was dead, and the western world was forever transformed. In this series of lectures, class will begin with an overview of life as it existed in mid-14th century Europe of the eve of the crisis. Then class will examine the origins and spread of the Black Death, discussing the ways in which medieval society was fundamentally altered by the outbreak. Political structures, religious and family life, art, literature, food, medicine, and the minutia of social behavior were radically reshaped as an increasingly desperate population sought, not only to survive the disease, but to make sense of their upended world. We will consider a variety of responses to the plague by different communities as they experienced it and listen to the words of those who wrote about it. When the devastation of the Black Death was over, a new Modern World was ready to emerge.
