The American Experience: Part One 1492-1930

This course is the first installment of the two-part lecture series: The American Experience. We begin this 8-week survey with an examination of the native societies in North and South America and the consequences of European contact with these First Peoples. Then we will move our discussion to British America, the Colonies, the American Revolution, industrial society in the North, slave culture in the South, and the settling of the American West. We will also discover the events leading up to the Civil War. This part of the series will end with discussions about the causes and consequences of WWI and the Great Depression. Together, we will look at the complex issues involved in the ever-changing nature of our American experience. And, we will see to understand how these historical events have shaped the political, social, and economic challenges that face us today.
