All ACT 2 Fitness category classes require a fitness form be on file with the ACT 2 office. One form is required every academic year. If "Add to Cart" buttons are missing for fitness classes on or after 2/24, first log in.

FITNESS CLASS DEFINITIONS and LEVELS

Physical activity = activity that increases energy expenditure such as walking or household chores.

Exercise = physical activity with the intention of developing fitness, agility, and endurance.

Guide to Fitness Levels

1 - Starting Out: For those who engage in limited physical activity 3 times per week or less.

2 - Getting Going: For those who engage in physical activity at least 3 times per week.

3 - Staying Active: For those who exercise at least 2-3 times per week.

4 - Athlete: For those who exercise almost every day.

 

Barre with Bands and a Ball

Barre is a style of full body movement exercise consisting of combinations of ballet, pilates and yoga. It can be practiced at home with a simple sturdy chair, countertop, railing or bar on the wall. Barre can help improve posture, balance, flexibility, strength, core and coordination. Students will learn about allover body alignment, feet placement for weight-bearing positions, shoulder positions for strength, head to hip placements for better control and balance. Overall outcome for the barre course is for better energy flow with fluidity of movement and less stress on joints by lengthening and strengthening muscles.

Class Notes: You will need a simple sturdy chair or countertop or railing or bar on the wall. Other equipment used will be a Pilates ball (between 4 inches to 9 inches in size) and a loop resistance bands (12 inches flat). Class will not meet 5/25.

Eight Treasures Qigong

The Eight Treasures are a set of ancient qigong exercises that originated in China have been practiced around the world for thousands of years. This form originates from the teachings of an aged herbalist named Li Cheng Yun who lived high in the mountains and is recognized as one of the longest living humans on record.  Each movement focuses on a different organ system to improve well-being and optimal functionality. If practiced routinely, this form may improve your health significantly. Studies have shown that regular practice of these exercises may provide physiological benefits such as improved digestion, cardiovascular function, and cognitive health.  In this class, we will also learn other subtle movement and relaxation techniques to enhance our innate healing abilities.  This form is easy to do and is very fun and invigorating!

Class Notes: Comfortable, loose-fitting clothes are encouraged. Paid parking not required. Class will not meet 4/20, 5/11, 5/25.

FitForever

This Class is designed for the Semi-Fit to Fit Senior seeking a more effective way to increase balance, muscular strength, endurance, functional movement, agility, and cardiorespiratory health. A weekly focus and "Teachable Moment" throughout the quarter increases your self-awareness as progressions build confidence. A great class to meet with others who also desire to improve physical function and learn why, how, and what to train.

Line Dancing: Beginner Plus

This is a Beginner Plus class. If you already know at least 10 line dances and/or feel comfortable learning at least two new dances at every class, then this class is for you. Beginner Plus line dances are generally faster paced and/or have tags, tempo changes, restarts, etc. but no worries as Sandy will make sure that you are having fun while challenging your memory. My Aging Fascia

Fascia is the glue that holds the shape and tension of your body¿s structure. As we grow older this structure changes and so can our posture and level of function. Come and learn how to slow down this degenerative process with some restorative techniques you can do at home.

Nordic Walking

Learn how to walk with Nordic poles for a fun and easy way to get fit. Increase strength and range of motion with less impact on your joints than regular walking. Nordic walking incorporates 90% of our muscles and burns 45% more calories than walking without poles. Each class includes instruction, a warmup, Nordic walking with resting as needed, and stretching. 

Class Notes: No poles, no problem! Poles are available to demo. Wear comfortable, supportive shoes and bring water. Intended, subject to change, locations are as follows in order: Holmberg Park, Whitworth University, North Spokane (Five Mile) Watershed, Gonzaga University. Pickleball Fitness for Life

Your friends, the news, your co-workers, celebrities, everyone is talking about the fastest growing sport, pickleball! Now, I hope you are ready to join the fun. Pickleball is a sport created for all ages and skill levels. It combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong into a fun court game that is easy for beginners to learn and challenging enough for competitive play. This class will cover rules, skills, drills & strategies of this popular sport with an emphasis on proper warmup and safety procedures to keep it being a life long activity.

Qigong: Level One

QiGong is a series of gentle slow movements and controlled deep breathing like those of tai chi designed to counter the extreme effects of stress on your body.  In addition, research shows that QiGong can also improve strength, flexibility, and endurance. This course is designed for all ages and can be done either sitting or standing, and all you need are comfortable, loose-fitting clothes and shoes. Tai Chi: Continuing

Classes for continuing and advancing Tai Chi students will be taught by Master Jim in nine 90-minute Zoom classes.  The class will cover the 54 movement Choy Short Form and the traditional 108 Yang Long Form.  Each class will begin with a short (3-5 minute) prerecorded video introducing a concept from the Tai Chi Classics.  Questions, topics and movements will be solicited from registered students via email up to 2 days before class; these submittals will be organized and addressed by Master Jim.  In-person questions will be discussed as time allows.  You need not attend the live in-person class; each class will be recorded, and video links will be sent to all people who are registered.

Grab a chair and enjoy a unique yoga experience. Use chairs and standing modifications of yoga, focusing on safety, and combine balance and flexibility poses with stretching, breathing exercises, seated meditation and relaxation. Grab a chair and enjoy a unique yoga experience. Use chairs and standing modifications of yoga, focusing on safety, and combine balance and flexibility poses with stretching, breathing exercises, seated meditation and relaxation. This class is appropriate for those with joint pain, joint replacement or back pain, or those finishing rehabilitation. Please bring a yoga mat and water bottle. Fitness Level 1 2
