Fact or Fake News?

Years ago, the evening news with Walter Cronkite gave Americans a shared set of facts that helped unite us. Today information saturates our lives. It arrives not only from our favorite newspapers and television networks, but also from social media, podcasts, email links, phone apps and text messages. Amid the information explosion, how does one discern reliable news from propaganda? Our country has become increasingly polarized and we no longer agree about which sources we can trust. Disinformation grows at a rampant pace. Living our best life depends on finding truth for our health and that of our family, our votes and even democracy itself. This class includes an exploration of various ways the digital world requires us to be more discerning than ever. Learn to recognize disinformation in the field of professional journalism and curate a reliable news feed.

The Healing Power of Writing

Writing allows us to discover what is often hidden. We will explore, through a feminist lens, whether it’s in the form of journaling, memoir, morning pages, or other forms, our trauma and emotional baggage, make connections, see patterns and through positive feedback, reveal the secrets we keep even from ourselves through other women’s stories.  We will give ourselves permission to put our feelings on the page, explore what they mean with positive self regard and a supportive atmosphere. We will write with self-compassion and clarity about who we are, what our memories mean to us and our lives.
