Designing Publications   

Designing Publications uses a combination of design theory and hands on practice using Adobe software to apply key elements of design into the creation of a variety of finished products. It will include the basic elements, vocabulary, and practical usage for creating products for both print and web. Students will use Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Acrobat to complete a sample project. This is not an introductory class to any of those programs.

This is the sixth recommended class of the Graphic Design Certificate.

After completing this course, you should be able to:

  • Recognize the principles of the printing process to complete the specifications needed to create and build a file for print.
  • Examine and discuss color process for CMYK vs. PMS and what implications paper product choice makes.
  • Define how a newsletter, magazine, or similar document can help with your marketing and education efforts.
  • Understand the basic tools needed to create a multi-page document
  • Construct and complete a multi-page publication in class.

Prerequisites:

Completion of the core courses in the Graphic Design Certificate is highly recommended. You will need to bring a minimum of 400 words of content and photos on a thumb drive so you can create a publication at the end of class.

You will need to have a login to a personal or work provided Adobe account to participate in this class. The college does not have access to manage your Adobe account and is unable to provide support.

For in-person classes:

You can get your FREE Adobe login here. No software purchase is required – you only need a login. This login will allow you access to the software in our computer labs. If you have an account that has been provided to you by your employer, be sure to verify that you have permission to utilize that account off-site. Otherwise, you can create a personal account for use in class.

For online classes: 

You will need to have your own license for the software on the computer you will be using to attend the class. Adobe offers a free 7-day trial for Creative Cloud which includes all of their software programs. You can sign up for a free trial here. You can only request a free trial once, and it is good for all software programs. After your free trial expires, you will have to purchase software for any future classes or use of any Adobe products.

Anyone looking to create a great newsletter, magazine, annual report, or multi-page document.
