Punching Up: The Craft of Writing Short Satire

In this class, you will learn how to craft short pieces of satire. You will learn about the two types of satire and study several examples of both, and you will complete several writing assignments representing different types and forms of satire. You will learn to give and receive feedback, how to make your work stand out from the crowd, and to ensure that you are always punching up. By the end of the class, you will have at least one piece of writing ready to submit for publication should you choose to do so.  The main learning objectives of this class are:

  • How to generate ideas
  • What "punching up" really means and how to avoid punching down
  • How to give and receive feedback in an honest, helpful way
  • To learn the process of editing and rewriting
  • To study and produce examples of effective satire
  • To write in different forms and styles
  • To gain the confidence to submit work for publication
