Solving the Publishing Puzzle

Many people dream of becoming a published author. Beyond needing a great manuscript, authors must know how to navigate the publishing industry – an often confusing, and sometimes intimidating business. Students will learn how to approach agents and editors, and be guided through writing individual synopses, query letters, and preparing an in-person pitch. Students who have yet to complete a manuscript can still participate in the course. A synopsis is a great way for an author to organize thoughts before writing begins.

Specific Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, participants will:

• Identify agents and editors and the purpose of each – focusing on the different roles each plays in the author’s career. • Identify standard ways in the publishing industry to contact both agents and editors. • Learn effective ways to communicate through query letters, synopses, and pitches; along with what needs to be included in each.

This class will be online through Zoom. You will receive a Zoom invitation prior to class. You must have Zoom downloaded on your computer and have a web camera, audio (microphone) and internet to take this class.
