This Driver Education course is approved by the New York State Education Department. Successful completion of the class entitles you to receive an MV285. State regulations require that students fulfill the attendance requirement for this certificate or they will not be issued an MV285. Check with your own insurance company for benefits and incentives that they provide for students with the MV285 driver education certificate. Attendance at ALL classes is mandatory. One makeup session for an excused absence is allowed for an additional $25 fee. The date for this make-up session will be announced at a later date. To report an absence, please contact Continuing Education at 607-778-5012 the day of the absence.
Student information will be emailed upon registration. In your packet is a parent permission agreement. This must be brought to the required parent/student meeting.. The dates and times for the mandatory parent/student information session are listed below. . Students must be 16 years of age and have their learner’s permit prior to the parent’s meeting. Register early to ensure your seat in the program. Refunds accepted until the day after the parent meeting.

I DRIVE SAFELY - Point and Insurance Reduction Course (PIRP)
SUNY Broome offers the New York State DMV approved 6-Hour Point and Insurance Reduction Course in a live classroom with a certified instructor.
If you are looking to save money and reduce your driving points, the I DRIVE SAFELY Course qualifies for the New York Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP).
There are many reasons to attend the I DRIVE SAFELY course:
- 10% insurance discount (3 years)
- Up to 4 points reduction from your driving record (every 18 months)
- NY State DMV Approved
- No final test!
I DRIVE SAFELY contains the most current information on defensive driving, traffic safety, accident prevention, collision avoidance, and the dangers of alcohol and drugs.
This course fulfills the 6-hour traffic school requirement for insurance reduction in the State of New York. Certificates will be mailed to participants who attend the full session and meet all requirements.
