Join author James Marquart as he shares his story of buying the home of a convicted murderer. You will hear details of the crime's investigation, along with the trial and sentencing. James will even share details of his correspondence with the perpetrator, who currently resides in prison. The lecture will conclude with a discussion of "authors vs. criminals", much like the situation involving Truman Capote in his historic book "In Cold Blood".

A person accused of the capital murder of his 10-year old niece was arrested, shocked with a cattle prod numerous times, and signed a written confession to the crime. After the death penalty was assessed, this mistreatment caused a motion for new trial to be granted and resulted in a federal indictment of the police officers involved. At the second trial he received another death sentence, but the case was reversed after a novel ruling by an appellate court.

Meet Scott and Jean Batty, who raised their son Theo, age 27, born with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, through six different states. Learn how a "vision statement" written when Theo was three years old, ultimately determined his success. Disability history, including the Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) in 1990 will be detailed. Scott, a former Army transplant surgeon will detail specific surgical procedures that helped ensure Theo's self sufficiency. Jean will cover her advocacy efforts including a successful civil rights victory over a former school district in Massachusetts and the creation of an ADA Transition Plan for a town of 20,000. A sibling perspective will be shared by sister Eliza. All important disability etiquette will also be explored.
