Come join us for a walking tour of the Mary Couts Burnett Library and learn about the library's art collection. You'll see a wide array of art from original Rembrandt Etchings to Andy Warhol Screen prints (and everything in between). We'll take a look at the artworks themselves and discuss how the university acquired them. Participants will also learn about the library's efforts toward conservation and academic research.

We will begin the series with E.L. Doctorow's RAGTIME, a historical fiction novel where the author intertwines real people and occurrences into the fictional narrative. Our second book, FROM THE MIXED-UP FILES OF MRS. BASIL E. FRANKWEILER by E. L. Konigsburg, focuses on Claudia Kincaid, a 12-year-old runaway to the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. The third novel, THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER by Carson McCullers, explores the themes of social oppression, isolation, and loneliness. The last book, BELOVED by Toni Morrison, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The novel is based on the true story of a runaway African American woman who killed her daughter. Be prepared for lots of good discussion.

From a pampered, privileged background to the bright lights of Broadway, Mary Martin was a musical theater legend. I bet you watched her at least once on a black and white TV when she played Peter Pan. Star of South Pacific and the original Maria in the Sound of Music, she gave it all to the stage. Learn about that drive and what it cost her.

The Canon will be a discussion of the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle about Sherlock Holmes. The development of the fictional detective and the background of the detective novel genre will be presented in a one session Lecture. Prizes will be offered to the individual that can name the first fictional detective. We will explore variations in the detective mystery. Also, we will debunk some of the common misconceptions of the character of Mr. Holmes. Deerstalkers and Calabash pipes are recommended. However, 7% solutions are not.
