An Interview with Francis Marion, The Swamp Fox

Histories of the Revolutionary War tend to focus on George Washington and his straightforward campaigns in the North, rather than small skirmishes in the South. Nevertheless, Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, was one of the war's most enduring characters. Though he never commanded a field army or served as a commander in a major engagement, his use of irregular warfare against the British has led him to be considered one of the fathers of guerrilla and maneuver warfare. Because the British never knew where Marion was or where he might strike, they had to divide their forces, weakening them. His tactics form a part of the modern-day military doctrine of the U.S. Army's 75th Ranger Regiment.

Charles Goodnight, Oliver Loving, and the Goodnight-Loving Trail

The Goodnight-Loving Trail, also known as the Goodnight Trail or the Loving Trail, was one of several routes used to drive herds of wild Texas cattle from Texas to more viable markets during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving certainly left their mark on the history of Texas and the American West, yet did not blaze the trail that carries their name. Like most topics related to the American West, the lines between legend, fiction, and reality have become blurred with the passage of time. What is the real story behind the legend of Charles Goodnight, Oliver Loving, and the Goodnight-Loving Trail?

Poland WW1/WW2: Where Europe's Heart Bled, Broke and Battled to Survive

On Campus Session

Poland was devastated by the events of WW2. The war began here, they lost the highest percentage of their prewar population. It was the site of extermination camps and then abandoned by the allies to live 40 years behind the iron curtain. I'm travelling this summer to Poland to get some insights and of course reading oodles of history books. I can't wait to share what I learn with you.

The Battle for Public Opinion: How Interest Groups Shape Perceptions of the U.S. Supreme Court

This lecture explores the critical role interest groups play in influencing public perceptions of the nation’s highest court. Through targeted advertising campaigns, these groups aim to sway popular opinion on high-profile cases, judicial nominations, and the Court's overall legitimacy. The session will examine the strategies used in these ads, the timing of their deployment during key moments (such as controversial rulings or confirmation hearings), and the broader impact these campaigns have on institutional trust in the Supreme Court. Additionally, we will consider how interest groups frame legal issues to align with political or ideological goals, assess whether these efforts successfully alter public views, and explore whether they reinforce pre-existing partisan divides. By analyzing empirical research, this lecture offers insights into the increasingly visible role of interest groups in shaping the Court's public image and its legitimacy in the eyes of the American people.

On Campus Session

This a thumbnail biography of the U.S. presidents, from the first through the 44th. We will look at their demographics, their families, and their political affiliations. We will cross reference what was going on around the world during their term of office, and what changes to the U.S. Constitution were made(if any) as a result of their presidency. This is an historical review, so the most recent presidents have been deliberately excluded. Come fill in the blanks of your presidential knowledge.
