Ingredients of Storytelling: Grades 6 - 8

This workshop combines the fundamentals of cooking to teach students about writing and narrative. Mise en place is a phrase in the culinary industry that means “putting into place” and is a technique that involves preparing ingredients and tools before the act of cooking. This workshop will teach students the mise en place of storytelling. Activities will include having students gather their mise en place to tell a story without words, instead, using objects and craft supplies (provided by instructors), going back to the basics of writing by looking at children’s literature to learn narrative structure, and eventually writing their own story.
