It is estimated between 40 and 50 thousand Americans, many fresh out of high school, went through a condensed intensive U.S. Army Helicopter flight training program. Approximately 12,000 helicopters flew in Vietnam, of which 5,600 were destroyed, mostly in combat. An estimated five thousand pilots and crewmen were killed. Enrollment limited to 24.
Instructor Sterling Holbrook first came to Alaska in 1980 to fly helicopters. He served as an Army helicopter pilot in Vietnam, where he engaged in more than a thousand hours of sustained combat and was highly decorated for his service. He will be joined by his wife, Krista Holbrook.
