    We will paint bottles, glassware, or jars with acrylic paint that you can take home and bake in your oven. Your project will then be permanent and washable. The instructor will provide plenty of glass choices, but you can also bring your own. Enrollment limited to 6.

    Learn how easy it is to plan your estate and leave gifts to people and charities that mean the most to your family! Philanthropic advisors for the UA Foundation will discuss giving through your retirement and estate planning and other strategies. All attendees will receive a printed will planning guide. Bring your laptop, and we will show you how to use UA’s FreeWill software. If you’ve never had time to meet with an estate planner or advisor, please feel free to schedule an appointment with Harry, Scott, or Miranda – questions are welcome, but they can give you more in-depth advice during one-on-one appointments.

    We now live in a time when we can easily see many thousands of films from the entire history of cinema. In the 1920's, motion pictures just started to mature and become very popular. So, let's see what audiences saw a century ago. Join me in screening 100-year-old motion pictures in traditional film festival format. We'll screen Buster Keaton's masterpiece The General (1926), plus other great films.

    Green Star of Interior Alaska will provide an overview of the landscape of recycling in the Interior, revealing “behind the scenes” at the Fairbanks North Star Borough Central Recycling Facility and the Green Star of Interior Alaska electronics recycling warehouse. We will also discuss future visions of recycling in the FNSB and answer questions Fairbanksans have about recycling. Facility fee $30; pay instructor at first meeting.

    Green Star of Interior Alaska is a local nonprofit serving the Fairbanks North Star Borough and Interior Alaskans. Our programs encourage reuse of materials, reduction of unnecessary waste, and increasing recycling efforts in our community.

    In this 4-week course you will learn the basics of the art form known as Zentangle. You will learn the backstory of how Zentangle came to be, how to create "tangles" in an easy step-by-step system, and how to incorporate these tangles together to create tiles. Additionally, you will create a Zentangle-Inspired Art Journal. No drawing experience is necessary. Before you know it, you will be creating beautiful art! Materials fee $20; pay instructor at first meeting. Enrollment is limited to 15.
    Instructor Carol Cologie is a retired teacher who enjoys art as a form of relaxation. She has been a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT) since 2018.

    *Section A and C: meets at 1255 Airport Way Unit 13 inside Gavora Mall where half the group will start with the myofascial care and breathwork class.
    *Section B and D: meets at 4001 Geist Rd Suite 16 inside West Valley Plaza where the other half will start with the energy work section.

    In this informative and experiential session, you’ll gain practical tools to release tension and improve flexibility through gentle myofascial techniques. Activate your parasympathetic nervous system through mindful breathwork and understand how an Energy Healing Room supports sleep, recovery, and overall energy balance by helping your body recharge on a cellular level. You will come to both of the locations for the course! When you work on the Myofascial part, classes will be held at the Airport way studio. The energy room part will be held at the Geist location. Facility fee $40; pay instructor at first meeting. Enrollment limited to 15.
    Instructor Karuna Linkhart is a block therapist, body worker, yoga teacher, energy worker, breath coach, and student of life.

  • REC-01B Bike Maintenance

    *Students must bring a bike.
    *Two sections of the same course; you may take either one or both.

    Learn how to fix flats, adjust gears and brakes, straighten wheels, and take care of bearings, chains, and cables. Set up your bike for better riding and be prepared for all conditions – even winter! This is also a great opportunity to fix up any bike issues with a local expert!
    Instructor Simon Rakower has been teaching bike repair for over 25 years in Fairbanks and elsewhere. He trained instructors to teach kids to work on bikes for the Recycle a Bicycle program in Brooklyn, NY. He dreams of a world where everyone can fix their own flats.

 

  • MUS-02 Beginning Guitar, II

    *Bring a 6 string guitar and a good attitude!
    *This is a two-part course; sign up for one or the other, or both.

    If learning to play guitar is on your bucket list, this could be your start! Each course we will learn to strum a chord and sing a familiar song. By the end, you will have dozens of songs available to you - right at your fingertips! Part II will be more focused on playing in a group and the etiquette involved, as well as feeling comfortable while doing it. Enrollment limited to 5 for part I; increased to 10 for part II. 
    Instructor Emma Centers started playing guitar in an OLLI class. She enjoys playing and performing with other music lovers.

    Music has great power to restore us to feeling calm and happy. It is the best antidepressant and anti-anxiety medication I know. In this class we’ll listen to some of the great music from the movies: musicals, theme songs, great singers, etc. Come take a break from this uncertain and unstable world to enjoy one of the good things in life and to rejuvenate yourself.
    Instructor Larry Moen provides comprehensive therapy services as a Licensed Professional Counselor in his private practice, Uncommon Therapy (https://www.utherapy.net/). Previously he has been acting coordinator of the counseling center in Utqiagvik, manager of adult services at Fairbanks Community Behavioral Health Center, treatment director of Children's Services on the North Slope, Dean of Students at Ilisagvik College, and the creator of the social skills curriculum used by Job Corps.

    You've mastered Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan, but now you want to try some of the more complex games? That's what this class will include! Games like Viticulture, Wingspan, Marrakesh, and maybe even Ark Nova, Tzolk'in or SETI. if you have copies of any of these games, let Laura know, it would save having to buy extra copies. Materials fee $20; pay instructor at first meeting. Enrollment limited to 12.
    Instructor Laura Walsh can often be found playing games on Board Game Arena (boardgamearena.com) and Yucata (yucata.de) and/or writing music on her computer.
