Dyed wool is a versatile material that can be used to make realistic 3-dimensional objects or a landscape or animal portrait using a few simple techniques. Both techniques will be explored in this class. No prior experience is necessary. Needles and felting bases will be provided. Materials fee $15, pay instructor at first meeting. If you can sign your name, you can learn calligraphy. Literally meaning "beautiful writing," calligraphy is a wonderful skill to learn and a fascinating look at how words were put down on paper, papyrus, clay, and stone throughout human existence. In this class we'll focus on learning the Italic hand, the most common form you see in use today. Once you master that you can make instant magic happen for letters, name tags, art, and a whole lot more. The materials fee covers the basics you need to continue doing calligraphy. If you cannot afford the materials fee please contact the instructor, as he likely can help. Come learn and enjoy! Materials fee: $60, pay instructor at first meeting. Enrollment limited to 15.

This class is a fun and creative way to learn about a unique art form, connect with a quilting community, and leave with a beautiful piece of art to display. Using a fused quilting method, you will create a uniquely Alaskan quilted wall hanging, featuring a pair of flower-filled Extra Tuffs. Materials fee $35; pay instructors at first meeting. The fee covers the cost of most materials. Enrollment limited to 12.
Instructors Lindy Kinn and Robin Benjamin have been quilting partners since 1989, collaborating and inspiring each other to create many beautiful and one-of-a-kind quilts. Robin’s precision and careful planning balance Lindy’s jump in and then figure it out creative drive.

In this class we'll focus on envelopes, invitations, art pieces, and multiple easy ways to make your calligraphy more striking and decorative. You will learn how to plan, draft and paint a 2x2 foot barn quilt, creating a unique piece of art to display. A materials fee of $10 (collected at the first class) will cover the cost of primer and paint. Before the first class you will receive instructions on how to choose, purchase and prepare your board for painting and where to find barn quilt patterns for inspiration. Materials fee $10, pay instructor at first meeting. Enrollment limited to 10.
Instructor Sandy Lachman took the Barn Quilt class last fall and taught the class last spring. Experienced quilters will be assisting students as they draft and enlarge their patterns for painting.

Focusing on Watercolor, we will observe the different effects materials, atmospheric conditions, and timing may make to our results. By exploring paintings published in art magazines and books, we can improve our own art through critique. We will note the importance of design to give impact to our paintings and to lead the viewer’s eye. Students will bring watercolor materials; the instructor will share materials, and we will play! Instructor Helen Howard has been a member of the Fairbanks Watercolor Society since about 2002. She has taken many workshops and courses from Vladimir Zhikhartsev and other excellent teachers in Alaska and elsewhere.

Join Northwoods Book Arts Guild members Chris and Vanessa for two days of bookmaking fun. Books will focus on memory and writing, as well as creativity and invention. Techniques for collage, writing, and bookmaking will be integrated in a lively workshop. Please bring copies of photos, letters, ephemera, or other items that will inspire memories. All tools and materials will be provided for use at the class. Materials fee $20; please pay the instructors on the first day of class. Enrollment limited to 10.

This course will focus on the freedom and joy of sketching for personal reward and growth! The group will meet at UPark for the first class, for insights and methods of keeping a personal sketchbook, and the following weeks will be spent at agreed-upon locations to add to that very same sketchbook.
Instructor Ruth Segler is a retired teacher who spends her time painting and traveling. She carries her sketchbook with her wherever she goes to record the world around her and improve her observation skills! Her sketchbooks are prized possessions as they hold her memories as well as show her growth as an artist. It also makes your colors brighter and allows new ways to mix colors. This class will show you how to enjoy using this new modern material. Enrollment limited to 12.
Instructor Peggy Swartz has been a part of the art community of Fairbanks for many years. She loves to explore new ways to use charcoal, watercolor, and pastel in her paintings.
