  • REC-02 Learn to Play Sudoku

    Sudoku doesn't require any math - just pattern recognition and that's great for the brain. The first 2 weeks you will gain the skills to be comfortable with easy to medium puzzles. In the last 2 weeks we will do 3 different puzzle varieties using your new knowledge. Everyone gets two Sudoku books and more will be available to purchase. Enrollment limited to 10.

  • REC-01B Bike Maintenance

    Session II: Mar. 16, 23, 30, Apr. 6, 13
    Mondays 10:30 - 1:30 pm (5 weeks)
    *Students must bring a bike.
    *Two sections of the same course; you may take either one or both.

    Learn how to fix flats, adjust gears and brakes, straighten wheels, and take care of bearings, chains, and cables. Set up your bike for better riding and be prepared for all conditions – even winter! This is also a great opportunity to fix up any bike issues with a local expert!
    Instructor Simon Rakower has been teaching bike repair for over 25 years in Fairbanks and elsewhere. He trained instructors to teach kids to work on bikes for the Recycle a Bicycle program in Brooklyn, NY. He dreams of a world where everyone can fix their own flats.

    You've mastered Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan, but now you want to try some of the more complex games? That's what this class will include! Games like Viticulture, Wingspan, Marrakesh, and maybe even Ark Nova, Tzolk'in or SETI. if you have copies of any of these games, let Laura know, it would save having to buy extra copies. Materials fee $20; pay instructor at first meeting. Enrollment limited to 12.
    Instructor Laura Walsh can often be found playing games on Board Game Arena (boardgamearena.com) and Yucata (yucata.de) and/or writing music on her computer.

    A team variation of the board game Trivial Pursuit with an edition where only seniors will know the answers. Will also include Alaska trivia questions. Exact format depends on how many sign up. "Prizes" for the winning team.
    Instructor Shirley Liss is a retired senior who likes games and card playing.

    *Meets at 1031 Alaska Railroad Depot Road, Fairbanks, AK 99701.
    Spend an evening exploring the model train exhibit at the Alaska Railroad Depot! There will be many model trains (running and stationary) and cool model exhibits relating to Fairbanks, Alaska.
    Instructor Alan Armbruster is a model train enthusiast and has created many of the display pieces. His current favorite is a model train that includes a pickleball court with players.
