In 1914, German forces threatened to invade France from the Alps on their shared border. The French military turned to an unlikely but ingenious place for essential help: Nome, Alaska. Racing against time, French officers asked famed musher Scotty Allan to select 106 local dogs for war service. Their top-secret mission took them by ship to Seattle, by train across Canada (where they collected another 330 dogs), then they sailed through the sub-infested Atlantic to LeHavre. Learn how the dog soldiers performed with merit, earning three Alaskan dogs France's "Croix de Guerre," the Cross of War. Enrollment limited to 40.
An author and lover of Alaska history, Tricia Brown writes for adults and children. Her research on the Nome dogs in WWI will appear in a forthcoming nonfiction book for middle grade readers.
