    We will present basic biology of birds, how they are faring, and what we can do to help.
    Instructor Amal Ajmi is currently a wildlife biologist at USFWS in Fairbanks. Amal came to Alaska for grad school and like many folk fell in love with the State and never left. Amal has worked and played all over the great State for over 30 years, focusing on birds and marine mammals.

    Do you set your glasses down and lose track of them? Beaded straps allow you to set them down across your neck and never lose them again! Learn how to make attractive, simple, fancy, or cool beaded straps for your eyeglasses. Bring the glasses or sunglasses you want them to fit on. All supplies are provided. This involves stringing beads; it is "close" work so bring appropriate eyewear. Enrollment limited to 5.

    We will paint bottles, glassware, or jars with acrylic paint that you can take home and bake in your oven. Your project will then be permanent and washable. The instructor will provide plenty of glass choices, but you can also bring your own. Enrollment limited to 6.

    Are you curious on how to make your own pair of underwear? Come and learn how to make them from a variety of pretty fabrics and elastics. You will leave with a pattern and a new pair or two of pretty underwear! Additional supplies available for purchase from the instructor. Enrollment limited to 6.

    We will explore how watercolors move themselves with the water as they go from wet to dry. We'll see how different pigments mix as we paint an elephant or moose. Please bring whatever brushes and watercolors you have on hand, 2 or 3 sheets Arches or Canson 140# watercolor sheet or block, paper towels, two wide-mouth containers for water, and a plate for mixing. Instructor will share paint and have some paper available for purchase. Enrollment limited to 12.
    Instructor Helen Howard has been painting in watercolor for over 20 years and has studied with Vladimir Zhikhartsev and other excellent teachers.

Philanthropic advisors for the UA Foundation will discuss giving through your retirement and estate planning and other strategies. All attendees will receive a printed will planning guide. Bring your laptop, and we will show you how to use UA’s FreeWill software. If you’ve never had time to meet with an estate planner or advisor, please feel free to schedule an appointment with Harry, Scott, or Teresa – questions are welcome, but they can give you more in-depth advice during one-on-one appointments. In-person enrollment limited to 26.

  • HL-12 Basic Mediation & Conflict Resolution

    What would it be like to be a mediator? This Beginning Mediation course will show you. You will begin by learning 3 fundamental communication skills for mediators to resolve conflicts. Then you’ll apply the skills in role-played mediations, with students as both mediators and disputants. This hands-on class will be useful for everyone, and the roleplaying will be fun! No experience necessary. Bring a friend! Enrollment limited to 16.
    Instructor Dave Frey managed a successful peer mediation program at Tanana Middle School for 16 years. He also worked part time as a mediator, primarily in child custody cases.
