Make a beautiful frame for your print. From local all-natural materials, you will design and integrate birch bark, spruce roots, and willows to form an exquisite picture frame. Material fee covers all of these and more: a knife, an awl, and clamps. Materials fee $40; pay instructor at first meeting. Enrollment limited to 8. During his many years teaching school in Alaska villages, Instructor David Bowen has developed a high admiration for this traditional Native craft. Come learn the basics of English Country Dancing! Enjoy wonderful music from the 1700s to present, and be social and physically active with others in an easy walking format. The most challenging thing will be remembering which is your left hand or right hand, how to walk, and then turn in a circle! Partners are not necessary.

Films & Photography "Film Noir (dark film) are films primarily based on hardboiled crime fiction novels from 1940 - 1960. These films have loosely-defined characteristics, but always present the darker side of humanity. In each course meeting, we’ll explore one aspect of film noir, then screen a representative film, followed by a short discussion. Ten titles will be chosen from Wikipedia's list of classic film noir.

Two-time Oscar winner Maggie Smith (1934-2024) appeared in classic Shakespeare stage plays to the fantastical film world of Harry Potter. Over her long acting career, she appealed to old and young generations, in diverse roles from the young ingenue to her classic Downton Abbey Dowager. During 2 sessions, we will view 8 films: her work with directors like Robert Altman, screen writer Julian Fellowes, solo and in ensemble casts including Judy Dench and Daniel Radcliffe. Join us on the Nile, the Orient Express, in Rolls Royces, seedy vans, and on brooms to be swept away.
Instructor and UAF retiree Ron Inouye serves as your film filter in the helter skelter of too much everything. Films are the preserved distillate of time, place, people, and history. What do you expect from someone who spent a career with libraries and museums? Others have been restored and operate today as historical treasures. Dormant locomotives have been pulled from display and put into operation. This course relates that history and delves into the operation of these railroads and the operation of steam locomotives. Modeling opportunities will be discussed.

Military presence in Alaska was minimal until 1935, when the war in Europe was perceivable and the US needed to take action. It was then in 1939 that the Fairbanks Air Base was established, and was renamed Ladd Field Cold Weather Test Detachment before 1940. Ladd Field Air Base Alaska became a major contributor of goods and services to the war effort in Europe between 1942-1945 through the Lend-Lease Act.
Instructor Donna Wheelock retired from Alaska Airlines and Northern Air Cargo. She also is a presenter of aviation history at the Pioneer Air Museum with a degree in History.

Are you concerned about more frequent memory lapses as you age? Want to do something about it? This half hour a day program, developed by Goodwin Living, has been shown to activate neural pathways and working memory. Studies have shown that doing simple math quickly, reading aloud, and writing by hand lights up the prefrontal cortex improving recall, memory and focus. Alaska Native Elders view aging holistically and enjoy sharing their lessons and experiences to help others embrace aging on their own terms. This course will share lessons and experiences based on Jordan's 17-year study on what supports Alaska Native Elders to age successfully and provide you with tips and recommendations to create your own successful aging journey.
Instructor Jordan Lewis is Aleut and Sugpiaq from the Native Village of Naknek and the Director of Research for the Center for One Health Research at UAF. He has been studying Alaska Native successful aging for 17 years and enjoys sharing Elders' stories and wisdom to help everyone learn how to age well.

Thoughts become beliefs become behaviors become habits become physical reality. As we each elevate our own attitudes, we change our own world. What's better yet, feelings and thoughts are contagious. These sessions provide a comfortable environment for beginning jugglers, those who are just curious, as well as more advanced jugglers. Participants will practice at their own level with the teacher on hand to offer instruction in developing new skills and proper techniques. If you learned when you were a kid but got stuck at a certain stage, if you are a complete beginner who would like to challenge yourself with something new, or if you are an experienced juggler looking to practice in a supportive environment, come juggle with us! Enrollment limited to 12.
Instructor Nadav Weiss has been juggling since he was a child. He has taught extensively in schools in Fairbanks, as well as adult classes through OLLI and other venues.

Instructor Simon Rakower has been teaching bike repair for over 25 years in Fairbanks and elsewhere. He trained instructors to teach kids to work on bikes for the Recycle a Bicycle program in Brooklyn, NY. He dreams of a world where everyone can fix their own flats.
