October 12: Afternoon Session - "Is Beauty in the Eyes of the Beholder? Using Anti-Discrimination Laws to Attack Appearance Discrimination"

Studies show that people who are attractive, slim, and tall are more likely to be hired, promoted, and earn more money over the course of their careers. But attractiveness does not tell us anything about a person's ability to do his or her job. In addition, this preference for pretty and handsome likely disproportionately affects women and people of color. We'll discuss the phenomenon of appearance discrimination and explore ways that employees have successfully used federal anti-discrimination laws to attack this phenomenon.
