    We will read and discuss the ancient Greek playwright Euripides’ radiant tragicomedy Alcestis in which a wife willingly dies in her husband’s place. In this piece, he learns something about what it means to be human, and the hero, Heracles, wrestles Death to reunite the couple. Please Note: This course has required supplies.

    This class will survey four works of fiction from the twentieth century that are pivotal and enduring in the literary lexicon and the culture at large — but that are largely unread by modern audiences.
