AMERICA: 1970S AND 1980S, CONTINUED

Conservation in the Progressive Era, 1900-1920, was the origin of the environmentalism which emerged in the 1950s. After World War II, thirty years of prosperity had side effects of pollution, oil spills, a nuclear meltdown, and hazardous waste. Environmentalism found successes, but the Reagan years brought reversals. Americans embraced environmentalism but often failed to practice it.
